Description

A noticeably cooler upland town than coastal Dumaguete — genuinely a few degrees cooler, which is part of the appeal on its own — and the jump-off point for Negros Oriental’s two most-visited waterfalls. Casaroro Falls drops about 30m into a canyon at the base of Mount Talinis (Cuernos de Negros); reaching it means a steep 350+ step staircase and a short river-boulder trek, 20-45 minutes each way depending on pace and conditions — check weather first, flash floods have damaged the trail before. Pulangbato Falls, by contrast, needs no trekking at all — you can ride right up to it, with reddish rock coloring from sulfur deposits, and the adjacent Red Rock Hot Spring makes a natural cold-to-hot contrast afterward. Beyond the falls circuit, Valencia town itself has its own small café-and-market cluster worth a slower look rather than just passing through, plus a ridge walk looking out over the foothill villages toward the Dumaguete plain (clear-sky days only — cloud cover is common at this elevation), and a scatter of foothill villages across Mount Talinis’s lower slopes.

HOW TO GET THERE: From Dumaguete, jeepney or multicab from the public market/Sta. Rosa Street corner (₱12-15, ~20-30 min, no fixed schedule — they leave when full). From Valencia town proper, hire a habal-habal to the falls (~₱200-300 for Casaroro alone, ~₱800 for a combined Casaroro + Pulangbato + Red Rock Hot Spring circuit for two — worth it if doing all three). Alternative: rent a scooter in Dumaguete (~₱450/day plus gas) for full control of the day, roads are paved though the final Casaroro stretch is steeper. Entrance fees: Casaroro ₱10, Pulangbato ₱50, Red Rock Hot Spring ₱50.

BEST TIME: Before 9am for the falls — cooler for the staircase climb and ahead of weekend crowds. Avoid right after heavy rain given the river crossing. Weekdays noticeably quieter than weekends.
