Sipaway Island (Refugio Island)

Description

Island off San Carlos City, geographically named Refugio Island — roughly 7km tip to tip and 1.5km wide, made up of two barangays (Ermita and San Juan) and coverable in a day. Cream-to-white sand beaches, cliffs, clear shallows good for swimming with kids, mangrove plantations, and several dive spots. Named spots on the island include Whispering Palms, Lawis (Pitogo), Pang-pang (the cliff), Dap-dap, Ermita, and the well-known balete tree in San Juan. Getting there: passenger outrigger boats leave San Carlos port roughly every 15-30 minutes from about 6am to 6pm, take 10-20 minutes, and cost around ₱15-20; boats sometimes wait until about ten passengers are aboard. A whole-boat charter for a day runs around ₱1,000 (holds about 15). On the island, tricycles cost about ₱25/person shared or ₱100 solo, and an island tour by trike runs roughly ₱200-350. Barangay Ermita’s beach has had a small entrance fee of about ₱20. Practical: no ATM on the island, and WiFi reaches only one or two resorts. Roughly 0.0km (0 min walk) from Sipaway Island.
