Amlan Root Crop Zone
Description
Cassava and gabi farms in Amlan uplands. In Amlan, a small east-coast town between Dumaguete and Tanjay. Cassava, camote, gabi and ube are the fallback staple in the uplands here — boiled as merienda, and the base of kakanin and budbud. Native siling labuyo grows in backyards rather than fields: small, fiercely hot, sold by the heap in the market.
Tips
This is an ordinary working town market without tourist traffic, which is the point — expect no English signage and no fixed prices. Buy fruit in season and vinegar direct from makers at roadside stalls rather than in the market building.
