Malatapay Port / Wharf — Gateway to Apo Island
Description
The jump-off point for Apo Island, in Barangay Malatapay, Dauin — home base of the famous twice-weekly Malatapay Market. From Dumaguete: jeepney or Ceres bus heading toward Zamboanguita/Bayawan (ask to be dropped at Malatapay Market/Wharf), roughly 45 minutes, ₱20-25 one way. From Bacolod: a long haul — Ceres bus via Kabankalan-Mabinay to Dumaguete first (6-7 hours), then the same onward route to Malatapay. Boats to Apo Island are small motorized outrigger bancas, no fixed timetable — they leave once enough passengers gather, typically starting 7-9am, with the last return from Apo strictly by 4pm (arrive back at the wharf by then or you’re stuck). Round-trip charter: roughly ₱3,500 for up to 3-4 people, scaling up to ₱5,000-6,000+ for larger groups — cheaper per person if you can group up with other travelers waiting at the wharf. Crossing takes 30-45 minutes depending on sea conditions. Apo Island’s own environmental/entrance fee (₱100 Filipino, ₱300 foreign) is separate and paid on arrival. Best sailing conditions December-May; expect rougher water and possible cancellations June-November.
