Maricalum Mining Corporation Ruins
Description
Abandoned copper mining site — the remains of the operation that shaped Sipalay’s twentieth-century development, with mining claims in the area dating from the late 1950s. Mining here was the subject of intense conflict between operators and environmental groups through the 1980s and 90s; since operations ceased the site has become a destination in its own right. The abandoned tailings pond has a barren, light-brown landscape that visitors frequently compare to Mars or the Colorado rockies, and the flooded open pit is visible from Mines View Park. IMPORTANT ACCESS NOTE: there’s a public viewing spot, but going inside the site itself requires coordinating with the Sipalay City tourism office first — don’t plan on walking in. About 7.6km from Sugar Beach — vehicle or boat distance.
