Sagay Marine Reserve & Carbin Reef: Philippines’ Largest Marine Sanctuary

Description

At 32,000 hectares, Sagay Marine Reserve (established 1999, protecting Carbin and Maca reefs) is the largest marine reserve in the Philippines — a tongue-shaped white sandbar with genuinely good swimming and snorkeling, deliberately kept minimal (a few cottages, no food stores) to protect the site.

Worth knowing honestly: a molasses spill from a passing ship discolored roughly 1.3 hectares of the reserve’s waters in August 2024 — check current conditions/reports before planning a visit if water quality is a concern, rather than assuming pristine conditions year-round.

HOW TO GET THERE: Roughly 1.5-2 hours from Bacolod by road to Sagay, then boat out to the reef/sandbar itself.

BEST TIME: Calm-weather days for the boat crossing and best visibility; bring your own food and water since the sandbar itself has none for sale.
