Saint Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral
Description
Also known simply as Dumaguete Cathedral — the oldest stone church in Negros, seat of the Diocese of Dumaguete. The parish itself dates to 1620; the current coral-stone structure was built 1754-1776, reconstructed in 1885 after damage, and given its present Baroque facade in 1936. Became a cathedral when Dumaguete was elevated to a Diocese in 1955. Four entrance pillars are topped with statues of the Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John); Saints Peter and Paul are sculpted on the facade. Feast day (patroness St. Catherine of Alexandria) is November 25. Right beside it stands the Campanario de Dumaguete (the belfry) — built around 1811 as a watchtower against Moro raiders, the oldest bell tower in the Visayas. Sits directly across from Quezon Park, making the church-belfry-park cluster the historic core of downtown. Best visited early morning or Sunday if you want it quieter than mass hours.
