San Sebastian Cathedral

Description

Cathedral — Catholic cathedral — seat of the Diocese of Bacolod, on Rizal Street flanking Bacolod Public Plaza. Began as a small wooden chapel in 1825/1876, rebuilt in coral stone quarried from Guimaras Island with hardwood from Palawan, and consecrated January 19, 1882 by Bishop Mariano Cuartero. Blends Romanesque and Gothic Revival styles — barrel-vaulted ceiling, gilded Corinthian columns, twin bell towers. Patron saint St. Sebastian’s feast day is celebrated January 20. Forms the historic civic core of the city together with the adjacent Plaza and Old City Hall.
