Sipalay Seaweed Harvest Area
Description
Seasonal seaweed collection along Sipalay coast. In Sipalay, the southwest beach and dive town, where the catch goes straight to roadside grills. Seaweed farming here is tidal and seasonal — lines and floats offshore, drying tarpaulins along the road. Fresh lato (sea grapes) reaches the market as a salad with vinegar, tomato and onion; the dried crop goes into the carrageenan trade. Low tide is when the work is visible.
Tips
Grills are lit late afternoon and evening; going at midday misses the point entirely. It"s a 4-5 hour drive from Bacolod, so plan an overnight rather than a day trip.
Stops
Western Coastal Food Chain
How to get there
Ceres bus from Bacolod, roughly 4-5 hours — the single most important planning fact for a Sipalay trip.
Best Times
Late afternoon and early evening when the grills are lit.
