Tanjay Seaweed Area

Description

Seaweed farming in the coastal barangays of Tanjay. In Tanjay, an east-coast city known island-wide as the source of budbud. Seaweed farming here is tidal and seasonal — lines and floats offshore, drying tarpaulins along the road. Fresh lato (sea grapes) reaches the market as a salad with vinegar, tomato and onion; the dried crop goes into the carrageenan trade. Low tide is when the work is visible.

Tips
Budbud made here goes out by truck to Dumaguete daily — buying it in Tanjay means getting it before it travels. Ask at the market early; production is household-scale and finishes by mid-morning.
Stops
Dumaguete–Valencia Food Belt
How to get there
On the east-coast highway between Dumaguete and Bais; any northbound bus or jeepney passes through.
Best Times
Early morning — markets, landings and roadside stalls all run hardest before 8am.
