Description

Backyard fruit trees in coastal barangays. In Zamboanguita, the coastal town south of Dumaguete, home of the Wednesday Malatapay market and the Apo Island boats. Backyard and smallholder fruit rather than commercial orchards — mango, guava, santol, duhat, rambutan, calamansi depending on the month. What’s piled at roadside stalls at any given time is what’s actually ripe nearby, which is the plainest way to read the season.

Tips
Wednesday only — any other day the site is nearly empty, so don"t make the trip on spec. Go early; it packs up by lunchtime. Rice servings at the beach-end eateries are large enough to split. Bring cash in small notes; the livestock arena is dusty and hot, so cover up.
Stops
Southern Uplands & Coastal Food Chain
How to get there
Tricycle to the Zamboanguita terminal in Dumaguete, then jeepney about 40 minutes for around ₱20 — the driver drops you at the Malatapay junction.
Best Times
Wednesday only for Malatapay, and go early — it packs up by lunchtime.
