Dumaguete City Public Market
Description
The city’s main public market, on Real Street — 10 buildings, roughly 934 stalls, subdivided into non-perishable goods (pots, pans, tools, dry grocery, rice, feeds) and perishable sections (fresh fish brought in by Bayawan fishermen, produce, meat, spices). Opens as early as 4-5am and runs into the evening (roughly 5am-7pm). Prices are negotiable — haggling is normal and expected here, unlike supermarkets. Won the DTI’s Pambansang Pamilihan Award in 2006 for cleanliness and vendor organization, still referenced as one of the cleaner public markets in the region. The Painitan row (see Local Food category) sits inside this same market complex. A pedicab from downtown costs roughly ₱20.
