Basay, Negros Oriental: The Province’s Quiet Southern Tip
Description
Basay is Negros Oriental’s southernmost town, bordering Negros Occidental — genuinely off the main tourist circuit, and known locally for a few distinctive natural features rather than a developed attraction scene.
The coves and shallow caves along the Nagbo-alao shoreline carry local ‘enchanted’ folklore; the Negros cave frog, an endemic species, is found here; and the Pagatban River is locally said to be home to a native alligator population.
Bal-os and Cabcaban springs serve as both a potable water source and a genuine picnic spot, while Yardahan is a fishing village with good swimming and game-fishing.
HOW TO GET THERE: Roughly a 2.5-hour drive from Dumaguete — this is a genuine distance, not a casual day-trip add-on, so plan it as a deliberate stop on a longer southern Negros route rather than a quick detour.
BEST TIME: Dry season (December-May) for easier travel on what are largely rural roads this far south.
