Silay City Travel Guide: Heritage Houses, The ‘Paris of Negros’

Description

Silay is genuinely nicknamed the ‘Paris of Negros’ (or ‘Visayan Marseille’) for its concentration of European-inspired sugar-baron mansions — over 30 heritage houses recognized as the Silay National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines in 2015.

Balay Negrense (the Victor Fernandez Gaston Ancestral House, built 1897) was the first museum established in Negros Occidental, still furnished with period antiques and artifacts.

The Hofileña Heritage House on Cinco de Noviembre Street is unusual among these — still lived in by descendant Ramon Hofileña, who personally tours guests, and holds genuine fine art (Juan Luna, Felix Resurrección Hidalgo, National Artists Fernando Amorsolo and others) rather than just period furniture; open Tue-Sun 10am-5pm, call +63 34 495 4561 ahead.

San Diego Pro-Cathedral, designed by Italian architect Antonio Bernasconi and built 1920, is the only pro-cathedral outside Manila, with a dome modeled on St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

El Ideal, a converted 1920s Spanish colonial bakery building on Rizal Street, still sells the local specialties it started with — guapple (guava) pie, piaya, dulce gata.

HOW TO GET THERE: Short jeepney/multicab ride or 20-30 minute drive north of Bacolod — commonly paired with Talisay’s Ruins as a single heritage-focused day trip out of Bacolod.

BEST TIME: Daytime for walking the heritage zone streets; note some houses have specific open days/hours (Hofileña closed Mondays) so check individual house schedules before planning a full circuit.
