Tanjay Banana & Coconut Area
Description
Banana and coconut growing in the Tanjay barangays. In Tanjay, an east-coast city known island-wide as the source of budbud. Bananas here are several distinct varieties — saba for cooking into banana cue, turon and ginanggang; lakatan and latundan for eating fresh. Coconut groves feed three chains at once: copra, sap for tuba and vinegar, and fresh buko. Roadside stalls beside the groves are the cheapest place to buy either.
Tips
Budbud made here goes out by truck to Dumaguete daily — buying it in Tanjay means getting it before it travels. Ask at the market early; production is household-scale and finishes by mid-morning.
